About Stiftelsen Barnens Dag

In 1884 the first experiment with summer camps for children took place in Sweden. The teacher Agnes Lagerstedt heard about summer camps for children in Austria and decided to try the concept here in Sweden as well. Her accomplishment was absolutely fantastic taken into consideration the times when she did this - it was still 36 years left until women where allowed to vote here in Sweden!

The year after Agnes Lagerstedt's fantastic accomplishment, the foundation was established (in Swedish; Stiftesen Barnens Dag). 1911 we bought Barnens Ö and in 1941 we bought Fiskeboda... in the early days the main purpose of the summers camps was to feed the kids during the summer so that they would make it through another winter under poor conditions, to give them some new clothes, to remove fleas and cooties and to give them a strengthening and morally developing time away from home (whatever that was in the Victorian era...)

Today we try to focus on other values and the need to address problems like kids without clothes and with poor hygiene doesn't exist anymore. Instead we aim to create quality time and stimulate the kids in how to behave and function in groups with friends and among adults, we try to stimulate their mental growth and their self esteem, we try to stimulate their curiosity vis-à-vis life and all the small parts it consists of.

Today we make different sorts of summer camps for more than 5 000 children each year, we have 320 beds at Fiskeboda and 1470 beds at Barnens Ö. All at nice prices! On both places we have advanced environmental plans established. Hopefully we will be self supplying on electricity during this or the next year through our new windmill. We operate in a sensitive environment and we try hard no to be a burden to it.

In order to create resources for our core business (quality recreation for kids) we have a well established conference business at both Fiskeboda and Barnens Ö, we have camping sites, bout harbours, restaurants and lots of activities to try, but most of all we have the absolutely fantastic scenery at both Fiskeboda and Barnens Ö. They both are truly lovely places!
